Do Dogs Feel Love?

Pawsway

Feb 8 2012

We feel tremendous love for our dogs, and our dogs sure seem to love us. But is a dog really capable of emotions? Or are we just projecting our own love onto our dogs?

Scientists avoid the subject because part of what sets humans apart from the animals is our ability to experience feelings. To say that animals actually have feelings, in the same way we do, would change everything – perhaps disrupt our entire position and standing in the animal kingdom.

However, any dog owner knows that dogs love completely and have a greater capacity for love than most people. If one were to describe the main characteristics of a dog, they would have to be:

1.strong affection

2.warm attachment

3.unselfish loyalty and benevolent concern for others

Wait a minute – those are the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definitions of love. Probably why the author of Dogs Never Lie About Love, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson writes, “dogs are love.” So there isn’t a question of whether dogs love, the mystery is how they have such an enormous capacity for it.

There is no question that dogs love. Yes they are loyal and faithful and protective but if you have a dog you can see the love in their eyes especially when you are sad or upset. What makes them different from humans is that they give their love unconditionally and forever.

The biggest mistake dog owners can make with their dogs is to treat them like humans. The human race is such a kind, compassionate species that we tend to look at our canine companions as little humans, when in reality, they are canines and have a very different thought process. This is what differentiates mankind from other species in pack societies; there must be a specific order, from the leader on down to the last follower. Everyone has a place. The leaders are the strength of the pack, while the followers need the leader to guide them. Dogs have an instinct to constantly test the being above them and an instinct to know they will always be tested by the being below them. Instinct tells them that if there is not a strong being in charge, their life and the lives of the rest of their pack are at stake. This primal instinct keeps the pack secure and happy.

Of course dogs love! All animals do. I have had cats, dogs, snakes, iguanas and let me tell you a pet that you raise and show love and affection to will show you love in return. It may be in the smallest of gestures or even the biggest but they do love unconditionally! We should take a lesson or two from them. The world would be a happy place!

Anyone that has to ask the question "do dogs love?" has clearly never owned a dog, I wouldn't doubt that my dog loves me for a second. Some things just don't need to be said, you just know. I think that dogs in their own simple way love more deeply then people do...people make things so complicated when it comes to feelings, dogs just love unconditionally without boundaries or questions. It's beautiful really :)

Chloe is full of love. She is very affectionate, has a warm attachment to us, and does have unselfish loyalty and is concerned for others. Especially when I or husband is sick. Yes, she gives us very big kisses. I don't know how anyone cannot love their dog or cat especially when they wanted them in the first place. Chloe is part of our family and we treat her with respect too.
